David Beckham Donates Royal Wedding Suit (And Egyptian Cotton Shirt)

David Beckham has announced that he will be donating his Royal Wedding Dior Homme suit to charity, in order to raise money for those affected by last year's Manchester Arena terror attack. Victoria Beckham will also be donating her dress in aid of the 'We Love Manchester Emergency Fund'. Fans will simply need to pay £18 to enter an online draw and be in with a chance of winning their own slice of the Royal Wedding.

What was so special about the suit?

Designed by new artistic director Kim Jones, another talented Brit, the suit catapulted Beckham to the top of the ‘Best Dressed’ lists. Almost showing up Prince Harry himself, David Beckham cut a dashing figure in a charcoal grey super 130’s wool twill morning coat and pants. Over the top of the crisp white 200/2 Egyptian Cotton™ poplin shirt, he wore a light grey super 150’s wool twill double-breasted waistcoat and a grey silk satin tie.

Accessories wise, Beckham chose a grey silk satin pocket square to match the tie and highly polished black calfskin leather derby shoes. For that added timeless touch, he added a gorgeous golden pocket watch which contrasted brilliantly against the grey toned suit.

When it comes to fashion, the opinion of style bible Vogue magazine means a great deal. Luckily for Beckham, they described his ensemble as ‘dapper’ with a ‘slim, modern cut’. They also predicted that Beckham will be sat on the front row during Kim Jones’ Dior Homme runway debut next month.

Poplin shirt, wool twill. What does it all mean?

For those less familiar with fashion, a poplin shirt is simply one with a distinctive tight criss-cross weave. You may also see it referred to as tabbinet. Poplin is a popular choice for dress shirts given its durability (enhanced by Egyptian Cotton’s™ own strength), lightweight feel and silky smooth finish. It proved to be a particularly good choice in this instance as the breathable fabric will have been a source of relief in the gloriously hot sun. By choosing an Egyptian Cotton™ variety, Beckham indulged in a slice of true luxury. It was the perfect choice for such a historical day.

Twill is simply another type of weave, this time creating an unusual diagonal ribbing. Wool twill is a thick and wonderfully soft fabric that is highly crease-resistant and quite easy to iron. Twill is well-known for how well it drapes, which is why it is excellent choice of material for a longer tailcoat.
